The Idaho city of Pocatello, with a population bordering 55,000, is the largest city in Bannock County and the fifth largest city in Idaho. The region was occupied by the Shoshone and Bannock native Indian tribes prior to settlers arriving, and the city was founded in 1889, deriving its name from the Chief of the Shoshone tribe. Racing was launched on 3rd July 1964 at the Bannock County Fairgrounds, but within a year a row erupted over whether racing on a Sunday should be sanctioned, which led to the Pocatello Racing Association transferring its interest in Bannock County races to a new site close to the municipal airport. They named their new track, an 8 furlong oval track with a 302 metre home straight, Pocatello Downs which offered quarter horse and thoroughbred racing. Within 3 years problems emerged once again and the Bannock County Fairgrounds resumed their racing instead. Today the racetrack on Bannock County Fairgrounds hosts 9 days of racing a year, culminating in the Spring Classic Derby. |
